End of Year Tabla Concert with Lisa Young @ The Boite
Friday 22nd October, 8pm



Sam Evans' Melbourne Tabla School will be performing at the Boite World Music Cafe in North Fitzroy followed by The LIsa Young Trio.

This concert will begin with an end of year performance by students of Sam Evans’ Melbourne Tabla School, featuring 15 of Melbourne’s finest up and coming tabla players. Tabla students ranging from beginners to advanced will be performing intricate traditional compositions in small groups in unison with sitar accompaniment. With solo sections, spoken rhythms and complex cycles the music is a celebration of the rising interest in tabla playing in Melbourne.

The tabla school performance will be followed by The LIsa Young Trio, a new collaboration of Lisa Young (voice) Ben Robertson (double bass) and Sam Evans (tabla).Lisa is a member of the acclaimed vocal group Coco’s Lunch, and her Jazz quartet recently won the ‘BELL’ award for ‘Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album’ with their album ‘GRACE’. Lisa, Ben and Sam are well known to World/Jazz listeners as creative stylists and improvisers, incorporating Indian and African influences in their work. This new trio explores their diverse musical expression, layering Indian sounds, rhythms and textures in an evocative journey of song.

With 12 students performing in groups, solo and accompanied, electro tabla, and small bands the end of year tabla school concert will be a lot of fun. Students of all levels will be performing and tabla teacher Sam Evans will be performing solo tabla lehara at the end of the evening. Concert is open to Friends, Family and Guests. Tour of North India - 2009
November to December 2009

With a series of concerts booked across north India Sam Evans will be performing traditional solo tabla lehara as well as performing with the astounding Indian classical guitarist Debasis Chakroborty (an A grade artsit for All India Radio and Television)

Performing in Delhi, Agra, Aligarh and Raigarh (near Chattisgarh) from the 20th to 26th November. Stay tuned for updates. Sam will also be studying with his Guru,
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in Calcutta during this tour.
