End of Year Tabla Concert with Lisa Young @ The Boite
Friday 22nd October, 8pm

Sam Evans' Melbourne Tabla School will be performing at the Boite World Music Cafe in North Fitzroy followed by The LIsa Young Trio.

This concert will begin with an end of year performance by students of Sam Evans’ Melbourne Tabla School, featuring 15 of Melbourne’s finest up and coming tabla players. Tabla students ranging from beginners to advanced will be performing intricate traditional compositions in small groups in unison with sitar accompaniment. With solo sections, spoken rhythms and complex cycles the music is a celebration of the rising interest in tabla playing in Melbourne.

The tabla school performance will be followed by The LIsa Young Trio, a new collaboration of Lisa Young (voice) Ben Robertson (double bass) and Sam Evans (tabla).Lisa is a member of the acclaimed vocal group Coco’s Lunch, and her Jazz quartet recently won the ‘BELL’ award for ‘Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album’ with their album ‘GRACE’. Lisa, Ben and Sam are well known to World/Jazz listeners as creative stylists and improvisers, incorporating Indian and African influences in their work. This new trio explores their diverse musical expression, layering Indian sounds, rhythms and textures in an evocative journey of song.

Soul Food @ The State Library
Sunday 4th July

Soul Food is a monthly event held at the State Library of Victoria, providing an opportunity to relax in a tranquil environment and reflect on inspiring themes. It features music, audio-visual pieces and readings from various faiths, poets and philosophers; indigenous, ancient and modern, from all over the world.

Fine Blue Thread - Music for the Soul Series

Fine Blue Thread will be performing in the fantastic sounding Northcote Uniting Church with Shakuhachi player Anne Norman. The last Fine Blue Thread concert in this venue was also with Anne Norman and was sold out. Arrive early for tickets. (The band will be on risers for better viewing this year.)

Melbourne International Jazz Festival
Thursday, April 30th

Sam Evans will be performing with the 24 piece Monash World of Music Orchestra that he directs at the university. A 1 hour performance of modern and traditional music from a variety of cultures around the world presented in their own modern and expressive style.

 

 

BMW Edge - Sound Series
Tuesday, May 26th

Sam Evans will be performing with the Monash World of Music Orchestra. A 25 piece ensemble that he directs, writes and arranges for at Monash University.

 

 

Mangala Studios Mid-Winter Dance Event
Tuesday, June 23rd

Sam Evans will be performin improvised creative solo tabla in Mangala Studio's mid winter dance event, the rhythm of life.

International Tour - USA
August 2009

Sam will be performing in New York before studying with Ustad Zakir Hussian in San Fransisco. Details TBA

Tabla School Concert 2009 - The Boite
Sunday October 25th - 7pm

With 12 students performing in groups, solo and accompanied, electro tabla, and small bands the end of year tabla school concert will be a lot of fun. Students of all levels will be performing and tabla teacher Sam Evans will be performing solo tabla lehara at the end of the evening. Concert is open to Friends, Family and Guests. Tour of North India - 2009
November to December 2009

With a series of concerts booked across north India Sam Evans will be performing traditional solo tabla lehara as well as performing with the astounding Indian classical guitarist Debasis Chakroborty (an A grade artsit for All India Radio and Television)

Performing in Delhi, Agra, Aligarh and Raigarh (near Chattisgarh) from the 20th to 26th November. Stay tuned for updates. Sam will also be studying with his Guru,
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in Calcutta during this tour.

 

Fine Blue Thread @ Melbourne Recital Centre
Sunday 6th December

ABC Radio National and Multicultural Arts Victoria presents Fine Blue Thread performing in The Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Widely acclaimed as Australias best venue for sound this will be a great show. Also performing at this event is Zulya and the children of the underground.
